This invention relates to sliders for slide fasteners and, more particularly, to a new and improved automatic lock slider.
Various types of automatic lock sliders have been heretofore suggested and used. While some of these lock sliders are satisfactory in their use, they are expensive to fabricate and difficult to assemble, primary due to the fact that they consist of a multiplicity of parts. Also,
most lock sliders of any practical use necessarily includes a relatively large locking member disposed on one wing of the slider and which protrudes outwardly therefrom thereby increasing materially the over-all thickness of the assembled so as to provide a strong and rugged 'construction.
It is a further object of this invention to provide an improved automatic lock slide having locking means projecting only slightly beyond the front face or wing of the slider body so that the over-all thickness is reduced to a minimum, and which is so constructed so as successfully to withstand contact with and pressure applied-by flatirons, pressing bucks, laundering equipment, etc., without damage to the slider.
Various other objects and advantages of this invention will be more apparent in the course of the following specification, and will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

The slider body in the several embodiments shown and with which the present invention is concerned is of the conventional type in'that it consists of a pair of spacedapart upper and lower wing portions 2 and 3, respectively,
connected at one end by a neck portion 4 and having marginal flange portions 5 so as to provide a substantially Y- shaped channel between the wing portions. Such a slider is adaptable for use on slide fasteners to engage and disengage the fastener elements in its longitudinal movement therealong in a manner well known to those skilled in the art. a

In one embodiment in accordance with the present invention, as shown in Figs. 1 through 4 of the drawings, there is provided on the upper wing 2, a central transversely-extending bridge-like portion 8 which is adapted to act as a bearing or saddle for the trunnion portion of the pull member as will hereinafter be explained. To either side, i.e. rearwardly and forwardly, of the bridgelike portion 8, there is arranged apertures 9, 10 which communicate'with the channel between the wings.
On the outer side of the upperwing portion 2, there is arranged a longitudinally extending yieldable plate-like combined pull attaching and locking member 12 having a loop portion 13 which straddles the bridge-like portion 8. On the upper end of this locking member 12, there is arranged a rearwardly extending projecting portion 14 which bears against the outer side of the upper wing portion 2. The extreme end of this projecting portion preferably extends around the neck portion 4 of the slider, as M15, and acts to aid in holding the locking member in position on the wing. This locking member 12 is made preferably of a piece of relatively thin spring steel.
Immediately rearwardly of the loop portion 13, there is preferably struck up from the rearwardly projecting portion 14, a tongue-like portion 16 which extends into the aperture 9 in the upper wing directly rearwardly of the bridge-like portion 8, as more clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. On the extreme inner end of this tonguelike portion 16 there is arranged a lip-like portion 17 which extends under a shoulder 18 arranged on the under side of the bridge-like portion 8 and which co-operates therewith to limit the outward movement of the locking member 12 and to aid in holding it in position on the upper wing.
On the free or forward end of the locking member 12, there is arranged another tongue-like portion 19, which extends into the aperture 10 on the lower side of the bridge-like portion 8. There is arranged on the extreme inner end of this tongue-like member 19, a locking projection 20 which normally extends into the slider channel and into the path of the fastener elements 6 therein I to lock the slider against unintentional movement in a well known manner. There is struck up from this tongueparts shown'in Fig. 5 to clearly illustrate the assembling like portion 19 at a point adjacent the locking projection 20, preferably a lip-like portion 21 which co-operates with a shoulder 22 arranged on the under side of the bridge-like portion 8 forwardly thereof and which acts as a stop to limit the outward movement of the locking member when it is subjected to an outward pull to manipulate the slider. There is provided a pull member 23 having a continuous transversely extending trunnion portion 24 arranged at one end thereof which is disposed in under the loop portion 13 and is seated in the bridge-like portion 8 on the upper wing 2.. With this trunnion por- 7 tion 24, there is arranged a cam portion 24a which cooperates with the loop portion 13 to move the locking projection 20 out of the slider channel and out of engagement with the fastener elements therein when the pull member is moved to an extended position or to a position substantially perpendicular to the slider body, as shown in the broken lines of Fig. 3.
In Figs. through 7 of the drawings, there is shown another embodiment of my invention. In this construction there is provided in the upper wing portion 2, a pair of spaced-apart rectangular- shaped apertures 25, 26 so as to provide a transversely extending bridge-like portion 27 therebetween centrally of the slider body. On the upper or rearward side of the upper aperture 25, there is arranged a lip-like portion 28 and on the lower or forward side of the lower aperture 26, there is arranged a similar lip-like portion 29. Both of these lip-like portions are preferably struck up from the body portion of the upper wing.
There is provided a yieldable plate-like combined pull attaching and locking member 30 having a loop portion 31 which is adapted to straddle the bridge-like portion 27. On the upper side of the loop portion 31, there is a projecting portion 32 which bears against the outer surface of the upper wing adjacent the neck portion of the slider body. On the upper or forward side of the loop portion 31, there is arranged a tongue-like portion 33 which is preferably struck up from the projecting portion 32 and which extends into the upper aperture 25, as more clearly shown in Fig. 7 of the drawings. On the extreme inner end of this tongue-like portion 33, there is arranged a lip-like portion 34 which is disposed in under the upper lip-like portion 28 of the upper wing and which acts to hold the locking member in position on the slider body.
On the forward or lower end of the locking member 30, there is arranged another tongue-like portion 35 forwardly of the loop portion having a locking projection 36 arranged on the extreme inner end thereof which extends through the lower aperture 26 in the upper wing and normally into the slider channel and into engagement with the fastener elements positioned therein to lock the slider against movement. Adjacent the locking projection 36, there is carried by this tongue-like portion 35, a lip-like portion 38 which is disposed in under the lip-like portion 29 of the upper wing with which it cooperates to limit the outward movement of the locking member.
Again there is provided a pull member 39 having a continuous transversely extending trunnion portion 40 at one end thereof which is disposed in under the loop portion 31 of the locking member directly next to the bridgelike portion 27 of the upper wing. Centrally of this trunnion portion 40, there is arranged a cam portion 41 which co-operates with the loop portion 31 to move the locking projection 36 out of the slider channel and out of engagement with the fastener elements therein when the pull member is actuated to move the slider along the fastener elements.
In Figs. 8 through 12 of the drawings, there is shown a further embodiment of my improved slider in accordance with the present invention. In this construction there is provided a pair of spaced-apart lug- like portions 45 and 46, preferably struck up from the body of the upper wing 2 so as to provide an aperture 47 therebetween. There is mounted on the outer side of this wing an elongated, yieldable combined pull attaching and lock member 48 having a loop portion 49 arranged therein centrally thereof. To either side of this loop portion 49, there is arranged in the locking member 43, substantially rectangular- shaped apertures 50 and 51. The loop portion 49 is positioned between the lug- like portions 45 and 46 directly opposite the aperture 47 therebetween with these lug-like portions extending through the respective apertures 50 and 51 in the locking member 48, as more clearly shown in Fig. 10 of the drawings. The lower wall of the aperture 50 is disposed in under the lug-like portion 45, as at 52, and co-operates therewith to hold the locking member in position on the slider body. The upper wall of the aperture 51 is positioned in under the lug-like portion 46 directly opposite a shoulder 53 carried thereby and with which it co-operates to limit the outward movement of the lower end of the locking member.
There is arranged on the rearward or upper end of the locking member 48, a substantially U-shaped extending portion 54 which is disposed around the neck portion 4 of the slider body and bears thereagainst, as at 55. On the forward or lower end of the locking member there is arranged a locking projection 56 which is disposed in a recess 57 arranged in the lower end of the upper wing 2 and which extends into the mouth of the slider channel at the lower end thereof in position to engage the fastener elements 6 to lock the slider against movement.
There is provided a pull member 58 having a transversely extending continuous trunnion portion 59 arranged on one end thereof. This trunnion portion 59 is disposed in under the loop portion 49 of the lockingmember 48 bridging the aperture 47 in the upper wing of the slider body. There is arranged with this trunnion portion 59, a cam portion 60 which cooperates with the loop portion 49 to move the locking projection 56 out of engagement with the fastener elements when the pull member is moved to an extended position and manipulated to move the slider along the fastener elements to open or close the fastener.
It will be noted that the slider consists only of three parts, namely, the slider body, the locking member and the pull tab, the locking member effectively connecting the pull tab to the slider body, and the three parts being capable of easy fabrication and convenient assembly. In assembling the slider, the trunnion portion of the pull member or tab is first positioned in the loop portion of the locking member. The locking member together with the pull member is then positioned on the slider body with the loop portion positioned between the lug-like or lip portions. The liplike portions or lug-like portions, as the case may be, are then easily bent into engagement with the tongue-like portions of the locking member to hold the locking member securely on the slider body.
When the pull member, in each instance, is actuated to move the slider along the fastener elements to open and close the fastener, it is moved out of parallelism with the slider body to an outwardly extending position, as shown in the broken lines of Figs. 3, 7 and 10 of the drawings. In moving the pull member to such position it will be understood that the cam portion carried by the trunnion portion of the pull member co-operates with the inner side of the loop portion of the locking member so as to lift or move the lower end of the locking member thereby moving the locking projection carried thereby out of engagement with the fastener elements in the slider channel. It will be seen that the locking member is se-- curely fixed to the slider body on the upper or rearward side of the loop-portion and that the lower portion of the locking member tends to pivot about this point when the pull member is actuated. The upwardly projecting portion of the locking member which bears against the slider body adjacent the neck portion acts as a spring to retain the locking member normally in a flat position against the outer surface of the upper wing. When the slider is not being actuated and is at rest, it will be seen that the pull member also is maintained in position directly next to the slider body.
As a result of my invention, it will be seen that there is provided an automatic lock slider which is simple and inexpensive in its construction and, at the same time, neat and flat in its appearance.
While I have shown and described several embodiments I which my invention may assume in practice; it will be understood that these embodiments are merely for the purpose of illustration and description and that other forms may be devised within the scope of my invention as defined in the appended claims.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. In a lock slider for slide fasteners, a slider body comprising a pairof spaced-apart wing portions connected at one end by a neck portion so as to provide a channel therebetween, a yieldable flat plate-like locking member mounted on one of said wing portions having a loop portion arranged therein intermediate the length thereof, a tongue-like portion struck up from the body of said locking member directly next to said loop portion, said wing portion having an opening arranged therein in which said tongue-like portion is disposed, means carried by said tongue-like portion which is disposed in said opening and co-operates with the walls around said opening to hold the locking member securely in position on said wing, said locking member having a resilient projecting portion arranged beyond said opening and said tonguelike portion which abuts said wing portion adjacent said neck portion and having a locking projection arranged on the opposite end thereof forwardly of said loop portion which projects normallyinto said slider channel, and a pull member having a trunnion portion on one end thereof which is disposed between the loop portion of said locking member and said wing portion.
2. In a lock slider for slide fasteners, the combination as defined in claim 1, including a lip-like portion carried by the wing portion directly next to the opening therein in under which said tongue-like portion is disposed for holding the locking member securely in position on said wing.
3. In a lock slider for slide fasteners, a slider body comprising a pair of spaced-apart wing portions connected at one end by a neck portion sofas to provide a channel therebetween, a yieldable flat plate-like locking member mounted on one of said wing portions having a loop portion arranged therein intermediate the length thereof,
said locking member made of a relatively thin resilient material, a tongue-like portion struck up from the body of the material of said locking member centrally thereof to either side of said loop portion directly next thereto, a pair of spaced apart lip-like portions arranged in said wing portion centrally thereof so as to provide a transversely extending bridge-like portion therebetween, said tongue-like portions disposed is under the respective liplike portions with which they co-operate to hold the locking member securely in position on said wing portion, said locking member having a projecting portion extending beyond the upper lip-like portion rearwardly of said loop portion which abuts said wing portion adjacent said neck portion and having a locking projection on the opposite end thereof forwardly of said loop portion which projects normally into said slider channel, and a pull member having atrunnion portion of one end thereof which is disposed between the loop portion of said locking member and the bridge-like portion of said wing portion.
4. In a lock slider for slide fasteners, the combination as defined in claim 3, including a cam portion carried by the trunnion portion of said pull member which acts to move and hold the locking projection in its unlocked position when the pull member is moved to and assumes one position.
5. In a lock slider for slide fasteners, a slider body comprising a pair of spaced-apart wing portions connected at one end by a neck portion so as to provide a channel therebetween, a yieldable flat plate-like locking member mounted on one of said wing portions having a loop portion arranged therein intermediate the length thereof, said locking member made of a relatively thin resilient material, a tongue-like portion struck up from the body of the material of said locking member immediately rearwardly of said loop portion, a lip-like portion struck up which abuts said wing portion adjacent said neck portion and having a locking projection on the opposite end thereof forwardly of said loop portion which projects normally into said slider channel, and a pull member having a trunnion portion on one end thereof which is disposed between the loop portion of said locking member and said wing portion.
6. In a lock slider for slide fasteners, a slider body comprising a pair of spaced-apart-wing portions connected at one end by a neck portion so as to provide a channel therebetween, a yieldable fiat plate-like body member mounted on one of said wing portion having a loop portion arranged therein intermediate the length thereof, a lug-like portion struck up from the body of said wing portion adjacent said neck portion so as to provide a first aperture directly next thereto, a tongue-like portion struck up from the body of said locking member immediately rearwardly of said loop portion, said locking member having an aperture arranged therein directly opposite said tonguelike portion, said lug-like portion extending into said first aperture with the tongue-like portion disposed in under said lug seats to hold the locking member securely in position on said wing portion, said locking member having a resilient projecting portion extending beyond said tongue-like portion which abuts said wing portion adjacent said neck portion and having a locking projection arranged on the opposite end thereof forwardly of said loop portion which projects normally into said slider channel, and a pull member having a trunnion portion on one end thereof which is disposed between the loop portion of said locking member and said wing portion.
7. In a lock slider for slide fasteners, a slider body comprising a pair of spaced-apart wing portions connected at one end by a neck portion so as to provide a channel therebetween, a yieldable flat plate-like locking member mounted on one of said wing portions having a loop portion arranged therein intermediate the length thereof, a tongue-like portion struck up from the body of said locking member to either side of said loop portion directly next thereto, said wing portion having a pair of spaced-apart apertures arranged therein centrally so as to, provide a transversely extending bridge-like portion therebetween, said tongue-like portions extending into said apertures and disposed in under shoulders arranged in the Walls of said apertures and cooperating therewith to hold the locking member securely in position on said wing portion, said locking member having aresilient projecting portion extending beyond said tongue-like portion which abuts said wing portion adjacent said neck portion and having a locking projection arranged on the opposite end thereof forwardly of said loop portion which projects normally into said slider channel, and a pull member having a trunnion portion on one end thereof which is disposed between the loop portion of said locking member, and the bridge-like portion of said wing portion.
8. In a lock slider for slide fasteners, the combination as defined in claim 7, including a cam portion carried by the trunnion portion of said pull member which acts to move and hold the locking projection in its unlocked position when the pull member is moved to and assumes one position. r
9. In a lock slider for slide fasteners, a slider body comprising a pair of spaced-apart wing portions connected at one end by a neck portion so as to provide a channel therebetween, a yieldable flat plate-like locking member mounted on one of said Wing portions having a loop portion arranged therein intermediate the length thereof, a tongue-like portion struck up from the body of said locking member to either side of said loop portion directly next thereto, a pair of spaced-apart lug-like portions struck up from the body of said wing portion so as to provide an aperture in said wing portion directly next to the respective lug-like portions, said loop-like portion disposed between said lug-like portions with the tonguelike portions extending into the respective apertures and disposed in under shoulders formed by said lug-like portions and cooperating therewith to hold the locking member securely in position on said wing portion, said locking member having a resilient projecting portion extending reaiwardly of said loop portion which abuts said wing portion adjacent said neck portion and having a locking projection arranged on the opposite end thereof forwardly of said loop portion which projects normally into said slider channel, and a pull member having a trunnion portion on one end thereof which is disposed between the loop portion of said locking member and said wing portion.
10. In a lock slider for slide fasteners, a slider body comprising a pair of spaced-apart wing portions connected at one end by a neck portion so as to provide a channel therebetween, a yieldable flat plate-like locking member mounted on one of said wing portions having a loop portion arranged therein intermediate the length thereof, a tongue-like portion struck up from the body of said locking member to either end of said loop portion, a pair of apertures arranged in said wing portion centrally thereof adjacent each end of said loop port'on so as to provide a transversely extending bridge-like portion between said apertures and in which apertures said tongue-like portions are disposed, a lip-like portion arranged in the walls of said apertures in under whch said tongue-like portions are disposed and with which they cooperate to hold the locking member securely in position on said wing portion, said locking member having a resil'ent projecting portion extending rearwardly of the loop which abuts said wing portion adjacent said neck portion and having a locking projection arranged on the opposite end thereof forwardly of the loop which projects normally into said slider channel, and a pull member having a trunnion portion on one end thereof which is disposed between the loop portion of said locking member and said wing portion.
11. In a lock slider for slide fasteners, a slider body comprising a pair of spaced apart wing portions connected at one end by a neck portion so as to provide a channel therebetween, a yieldable flat plate-like locking member mounted on one of said wing portions having a loop portion arranged therein intermediate the length thereof, means arranged immediately rearwardly of said loop portion for holding said locking member in position on said wing porton, said locking member having a projecting portion extending beyond said last mentioned means and rearwardly of said loop portion, said wing portion having an aperture therein forwardly of said loop portion communicating with said slider channel, a locking projection arranged on the free end of said locking member forwardly of said loop portion which extends into and through said aperture and which projects normally into said channel, and a tongue-like portion struck up from the body of said locking member d rectly next to said locking projection and which cooperates with a shoulder carried by said wing portion to limit the outward movement of the free end of said locking member, and a pull member having a trunnion portion on one end thereof which is disposed between the loop portion of said locking member and said wing portion.
12. In a lock slider for slide fasteners, a slider body comprising a pair of spaced-apart wing portions connected at one end by a neck portion so as to provide a channel therebetween, a yieldable flat plate-like locking member mounted on one of sad wing portions having a loop p r ion arranged h in in ermed e the leng h thereof, a tongue-like portion struck up from the body of said locking member immediately rearwardly of said loop portion, means carried by said wing portion which cooperates with said tongue-like portion to hold the locking member securely in position on said wing portion, said locking member having a projecting portion extending beyond said last mentioned means and rearwardly of said loop portion, said wing portion having an aperture therein forwardly of said loop portion communicating with said slider channel, a locking projection arranged on the free end of said locking member forwardly of said loop portion which extends into and through said aperture and which projects normally into said channel, and another tongue-like portion stuck up from the body of said locking member directly next to said locking projection and which cooperates with a shoulder carried by said wing portion to limit the outward movement of the free end of said locking member, and a pull member having a trunnion portion on one end thereof which is disposed between the loop portion of said locking member and said wing portion.
13. In a lock slider for slide fasteners, a slider body comprising a pair of spaced-apart wing portions connected at one end by a neck portion so as to provide a channel therebetween, a yieldable fiat plate-like locking member mounted on one of said wing portions having a loop portion arranged therein intermediate the length thereof, said locking member made of a relatively thin resilient material, a tongue-like portion struck up from the body of the material of said locking member immediately rearwardly of said loop portion, a lip-like portion carried by said wing portion adjacent said neck portion in under which said tongue-like portion is disposed and with which it co-operates to hold the locking member securely in position on said wing portion, said locking member having a projecting portion extending beyond said lip-like portion and rearwardly of said loop portion, said wing portion having an aperture therein forwardly of said loop portion communicating with said slider channel, a locking projection arranged on the free end of said locking member forwardly of said loop portion which extends into and through said aperture and which projects normally into said channel, another tongue-like portion struck up from the body of said locking member adjacent said locking projection which co-operates with a shoulder carried by said wing portion to limit the outward movement of the free end of said locking member, and a pull member having a trunnion portion on one end thereof which is disposed between the loop portion of said locking member and said wing portion.
14. In a lock slider for slide fasteners, a slider body comprising a pair of spaced-apart wing portions connected at one end by a neck portion so as to provide a channel therebetween, a yieldable fiat plate-like locking member mounted on one of said wing portions having a loop portion arranged therein intermediate the length thereof, said locking member made of a relatively thin resilient material, a tongue-like portion struck up from the body of the material of said locking member immediately rearwardly of said loop portion, a lip-like portion carried by said wing portion adjacent said neck portion in under which said tongue-like portion is disposed and with which it co-operates to hold the locking member securely in position on said wing portion, said locking member having a projecting portion extending beyond said lip-like. portion and rearwardly of said loop portion, said wing portion having an aperture therein forwardly of said loop portion communicating with said slider channel, a lock-. ing projection arranged on the free end of said locking member forwardly of said loop portion which extends into and through said aperture and which projects normally into said channel, means carried by said locking member adjacent said locking projection which co-operates with means carried by said wing portion to limit, the. utward m vement f the free end of sai lo king meal her, and a pull member having a trunnion portion on one end thereof which is disposed between the loop portion of said locking member and said wing portion.
15. In a lock slider for slide fasteners, a slide body comprising a pair of spaced-apart wing portions connected at one end by a neck portion so as to provide a channel therebetween, a yieldable flat plate-like locking member mounted on one of said wing portions having a loop portion arranged centrally thereof, said locking member being made of a relatively thin material and characterized in that it is inherently resilient and adapted to lie normally substantially flat against the outer surface of said wing portion, at least one of the walls of said loop portion having a tongue-like extension which projects into an opening in said wing, means carried by said wing which co-operates with means arranged on the inner end of said extension to hold the locking member securely in position on said wing, said locking member having a projecting portion extending beyond said loop portion which abuts said wing portion adjacent said neck portion and having a locking projection arranged on the opposite end thereof forwardly of said loop portion which projects normally into said slider channel, and a pull member having a trunnion portion on one end thereof which is disposed between the loop portion of said locking member and said wing portion.
16. In a lock slider for slide fasteners, a slider body comprising a pair of spaced-apart wing portions connected at one end by a neck portion so as to provide a channel therebetween, a yieldable fiat plate-like locking member mounted on one of said wing portions, said wing portion having a pair of spaced-apart apertures arranged therein centrally thereof so as to provide a transversely extending bridge-like portion therebetween, said looking member having a loop portion arranged therein intermediate the length thereof which is disposed opposite and straddles said bridge-like portion, means carried by said locking member to either side of said loop portion which co-operates with the respective apertures in said wing portion to holdthe locking member in position on said wing portion, said locking member having a projecting portion extending rearwardly of said loop portion which abuts said wing portion adjacent said neck portionand having a locking projection arranged on the opposite end thereof forwardly of said loop .portion which projects normally into said slider channel, and a pull member having a transverse portion on one end thereof which is disposed in under said loop portion directly next to the bridge-like portion of said wing portion.
17. In a look slider for slide fasteners, the combination as defined in claim 16, wherein the means carried by the locking member to either side of the loop portion which co-operates with the respective apertures in the wing portion to hold the locking member securely in position on the wing portion consists of a tongue-like portion extending into said apertures and in under the inner wall of the wing portion.
18. In a lock slider for slide fasteners, the combination as defined in claim 16, including a cam portion carried by the trunnion portion of said pull member which acts to move and hold the locking projection in its unlocked portion when the pull member is moved to and assumes one position substantially perpendicular to the slider wing.
